Winding up ahead of evolution

Glens Falls, New York

The first prize in the NY State Snow Sculpting Championship held in Glens Falls, NY. Pictured is a little man trying to wind up the brain of a large robotic-like head. One can see the gears and elements of the mechanism to the left.

Teams worked day and night for three days to carve sculptures from a 6’x6’x10’ block of granite-like, compacted, man-made snow. During the competition, temperatures hovered a few degrees above and below 0°F. Several teams withdrew for “medical” reasons. I suspect the cause was the deep cold.

John: Great image. I used to drive up there from NY/NJ to visit my sister in Burlington Vermont - in the early 70's. I bet it has changed now!!!
