Mexico... Day of the Dead, the Cemetery

Today we will travel to the cemetery to celebrate Day of the Dead. You will notice that at the cemetery they do not "poke fun" at death but rather they come to honor the dead. There is a stream of people walking to the cemetery. Along the road are stands selling flowers, food, drink and religious items. All ages come, as well as an occasional dog. There are prayers being said, graves being cleaned and the earth re-dug to mound the soil, and music at the gravesites. Families sit together and eat. Some graves have offerings of food laid out. It is a time of togetherness and remembrance.

As photographers, we came to see, to understand and to document a beautiful tradition and not to intrude. It was a touching scene as we observed families bringing armloads of flowers to place in whatever they had (a mayonnaise jar or a jalapeno can) at the grave of their loved ones.
