My beautiful mourning dove comes to feed in the garden. I have named her Speckles because of the white speckles on her chest. I refer to the bird as a female because she is so beautiful!
I have never before seen a mourning dove that looks like this.
I believe this is a leucistic bird... in other words, a bird with a genetic mutation that causes patches of white feathers where normally there would be no white.
I think it makes Speckles especially beautiful! Unfortunately, from what I have read, this may rob the bird of protective camouflage and may even decrease the chances of finding a mate.
