It was lunch time and I saw this vendor with his baguette in his hand.
I waited in line, and when it was my turn, I asked him if I could take his photo.
He at first had a questioning look on his face and said "Moi?" and then gave a big smile and said "Oui!".
I took only one photo as he had more customers and I did not want to hold them up.
A year later we return to France and I decided to take an enlargement of this photo to him.
I walk the area where I thought he was located but do not see him.
I stop and ask another vendor nearby. She did not speak English but in my "fractured" French I tried to explain to her what I needed.
I opened the envelope and placed the photo in front of her.
She immediately had a look of great sadness with tears in her eyes and said... (as I understood her to say), that he had died.
She stopped what she was doing and said that his wife was working today and showed me where to go.
And here is the rest of the story...
I found the kiosk and the woman looked Asian but fortunately, she spoke some English.
I explained that I had taken this photo the previous year and returned this year and thought he would like to have it.
She took one look and then leaned on her elbow and looked me straight in the eyes and said in a very stern voice...
"So... how did you know my husband?"
