The bear is the chosen symbol of Bern, Switzerland, for which New Bern NC is named. It was an easy choice for the Carolinians of New Bern to choose the black bear, so prevalent in NC, as their icon. The stylized bear statues, with their special identities, can be found throughout the area of New Bern NC.
