This photo was manipulated somewhat in software, since it's from a digital
camera, but I did only what I could do in the darkroom.
I changed it to B/W to simulate B/W film, since I used to shoot a lot of
Ilford!
I changed the contrast somewhat, trying to get the same effect I could get
with variable contrast paper and filters.
Then, I simulated as best I could the effect you get with out of date
paper, namely that washed out grey effect, which makes the face somewhat
ashen, and makes a nice depth of finish on the guitar. You can do the same
with chemicals.
The only thing I don't like in the photo is the white out guitar highlights
- but I'd get that in the darkroom too so I'm leaving it!
I also tried this photo in high contrast, but I preferred this one
overall... don't want to just copy the 50s do we?
