The more I look at it the more I like it! It's the relationship of the spider to that thorn - as if the spider is attacking the plant. The spider is going for the swollen vulnerable bit - maybe it's swollen because the sipder has already attacked it, and the plant is trying to defend itself by slowly extending a claw... v
