In 2006, five Asian elephants arrived at Tarongo Zoo and last year, the first baby was born. His name is Luk Chai and he is beautiful.
On 10th March, 2010, against all odds and written off by zookeepers at Taronga Zoo as having died in the womb the previous day, a little (well, not so little at 100kg), miracle was born at 3:30 am. To the utter astonishment of Porntip's keepers, she had given birth to a live elephant which became known to the zoo keepers as Mr Shuffles as the male elephant seemed to have problems supporting itself on its life side. But four weeks later, he is having a wonderful time and seems to have made great friends with Luk Chai. "Mr Shuffles" became Pathi Harn which is Thai for "miracle" but I think that he will always be known as Mr Shuffles. He has a fascination for water and the mud bath that the zoo has provided for the elephants.
