Belém Tower, built in the 1510s and a symbol of the Age of Discovery, to commemorate the expedition of Vasco de Gama. This defensive construction has become one of the symbols of the city. In 1983 it was classified, together with the nearby Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
