Media & Communication, Shanghai 2006

I need to explain this image. I know I often don't. After spending 1hr and 40mins yesterday trying to upload an image and failing (a different image to this one)because of how slow the internet is here at the moment, I lay in bed and thought what makes someone do that! Sit in front of a box, while a world goes by, where conversations take place...missing all that. That reminded me of this image I took early last year. It reminded me of that woman sat in the dark on her own looking at that television, while outside a light world with friendship and laughter existed just meters away. I realised last night I was her....looking for communication, lost in media...:-((K

Very well thought and illustrated, Kal. So true! While we get hooked to the media, be it tv or internet, we often forget about the personal touch, face to face communication and interaction. We're in some ways being pulled away into another world where we only connect electronically. Perhaps media isolation?

You didn't have to explain it. It's a speaking image, giving exactly the explanation you added in words.

Kal,

We look into boxes for answers and find more walls. There is always something breaking the view.

Peace is hard to find, however, it usually isn’t far off.

Small screen tv on the right and large screen HDTV on the left. :-) Great shot.

Agree with Adal: a modern interpretation of Edward Hopper. Love your sad story Kal. V.

Thank you so much for this image. I am very moved by your narrative also.

Your explanation makes this image even more powerful than what it already is.
Another example of your master story telling. V

For many Americans, Thanksgiving Day traditions and family gatherings are inextricably linked to football which is the prime television fodder during holidays. Thus watching NFL games with relatives after a traditional feast has become part of the ritual. But if one looks closely, this holiday picture is very similar to your photograph ---- a good many are glued to the television screen instead of talking to each other. How sad, really, this phenomenon of alienation, no community is immune. How's that for globalization?

There's an Edward Hopper feeling to this image.
He would have agreed, probably.
