Damn! It's much better indeed. So he's forgiven ;)

I could never tire of looking at these images. I saw some of this in Japan (still used today in some parts) but it was performed at night only. Another fantastic creation Kal

Thanks for clarifying. I would call this image an "arranged" candid -- the fisherman is demonstrating his ancient craft for you. I would guess that you compensated him for his efforts on your behalf. I'm glad you explained the circumstances behind this remarkable image, Kal. It is probably the only way to have everything going perfectly for you -- but then you still would need to have the vision to make the most out of such a moment photographically. You did just that here. If this image was published in an editorial publication, it would be appropriate to call it "Cormorant fishing demonstration" or something to that effect.

For Phil...both Phil, Cormorant fishing is tradition that is pretty much dying out in China, net fishing being so much more efficient. Here he is fishing as a demo for me, and actually caught fish. If you see to the right of his oar, you will see a splash, which is actually one of his Cormorants diving for fish. The boat I was on floated around him while he did his thing. So, no pose, but not exactly common tradition in China anymore...Rgds, K

This image reminds me of one taken by a friend last year.
I'm wondering if he wasn't at the same location and caught the
same fisherman.
I believe his was at a later hour in the day.
Awesome shot nonetheless.

The ultimate travel photograph. You link the man to his incongruous fishing crew in startlingly abstract form and then play that against a landscape that echoes his costume. It speaks of not only of great beauty, but of a unique collaboration between man and nature.

The only question it raises for me is its authenticity. There is no reference in the caption as to whether this fisherman is acting here as a model for you, and is dressed in traditional costume for that purpose, or if this is his customary costume and he was actually out fishing as you made the image. I think there is an important distinction here, and the viewer needs to have an appropriate context in which to read the image. In other words, is this travel journalism, or is it a beautifully posed image?

I've come back to this four times now, Kal. I'm so taken with the depth of this image -yes, it's part of this wonderful series, but in this one we really feel the collaboration between man and bird - they all look to their master, who in turn, steers them to the day's catch. David is right - what a narrative.

A closer look at his life, guided by the weak light and balanced by his good companion. And I like the wing spread of the birds, mirroring the straw coat on the fisherman. Felt like we'd be home soon...

Amazing shot - well captured!

Those ragged angular cormorants are holding some sort of tribunal by lamp light and command the frame perfectly. There is so much in this this picture, relationships, history, narrative not to mention the form and your deft composition.
Sublime.

Kal, this series is just amazing. I have no words... even in mum's language!
C'est magnifique, merci ;-)

The action is what caught my attention first - the birds, the water. Quite a contrast with the other photography pictured. Also a contrast with its own soft background. Beautiful!
