Read All About It, Shanghai 2006

A man taking a break from welding on a roof. Only protection he was using was that newspaper and glasses...it made me think...if there was a spark?.........

Where are my eyes? But smothered beneath a veneer of today's clamouring voices. With my direction of no choice but theirs.Painted and pressing firmly as a second skin that cannot moult away from my flesh.Destiny is indeed written.A matter of greyless black and white opinionated truths. And nothing else, in these unfocused times.Even though I know it is day,the ink writes upon me as a curtain prison night. And in my sleepwalking I reach around its edges for escape.Feeling nothing but empty exhaled air.

Is this enough words? If they have too much weight or are too many, please trim away the fat. Thanks Kal ;)

Hi Kal, I LOVE this one!! This image is both bitter and amusing so it is making a very powerful statement!

My first reaction is that he is reading, which obviously not possible with paper on the face and without the glasses. And then I read your caption, it is now making sense that the paper and the glasses are working as protections. It might be just a laugh for others but it surely works for him. And the protection at the same time blind him. I feel he could be anyone of us, when we get so involve in what we are doing, sometimes we just can't see the whole picture.

si, Pulitzer ! And a bravo from Pirandello as well !
Guest 27-Jan-2006 05:47
Wow - this is clearly one of your top images. And that's saying a lot as you've produced some strong ones lately. I love the perspective and framing. B&w is perfect. I'm not sure if Phil is reading too much meaning, but find his comments interesting. Regardless, soooo very good, in fact, perfect - your seminal image so far. VOTE (of course).

Ray, I am struck by your metaphor, and Phils comments on development...when I took the picture as I said, I though about the irony of how the newspaper, intended as his protection was maybe his greatest threat. The things we use to protect ourselves often blind us to the real threats in life...the definition of a paradigm...to look at the world through a set of perscription glasses..they only work for you...nobody will ever see the world the way you see it through them....Pirandello would be proud ;-))

Strong and impressive shot! To hide or to show, affliction or provocation, your catch is at the border of many ways and in each still so powerfull. Great one.

Yes, excellent shot. Very journalistic and superbly done.

Yes Kal , a very moving shot . Comic at first, then if you read between the lines , disturbing. You do find these little gems . Well done.

Fantastic image Kal! The use of b&w, the angle, the framing and the content are all brilliant!
Guest 25-Jan-2006 20:49
Real life and very powerful

Although China is now a superpower, third-world labor practices still linger (and in some cases predominate.)
This image underscores that point eloquently, Kal. You use abstraction (the mask), incongruity (newspaper as mask) and human values (exhaustion) to express your message.

Two thousand seven hundred and thirty two votes. This is the best image you've ever produced. I'm completely going with Ray here.

Hey Kal I have seen this in Mexico. Just shake my head. Nice capture.

Actually I find this a very potent metaphor for censorship in China --- Google goggles? Brilliant!!!
