That's what immediately strikes me: the fact that the child is so small is emphasized very strongly by the big stairs. I also like the way both the horizontal and vertical lines in the image direct you to the child. So, although the child is small, it's still the main point of attention in the image. Very, very well done and voted.
Scale incongruity (small kid, big steps), abstraction (kid shot from back), and human values (curiosity, awe, possible a bit fear, too) add up to another expressive image.
