I can't remember a summer of hell like this one.Fried on the urban grill. Our mouths gaping from suffocation. The flies pecking at the juice sweating from our carcasses. Our bodies draped in the nonexistent shade.Dehydrated from any ambition.I don't understand how you can talk about supper at a time like this.

Very good and meaningful shot.

Fascinating picture. Phil's comments remind me of the classic picture (movie, that is) "Chinatown" starring Jack Nicholson. There's a scene where he shares a meal, of grilled fish (with head attached), with John Houston's character. Nicholson then comments that he prefers his chicken without the head. There's tremendous photographic detail in this Polanski movie, like many of the fine photographs by talented artists on this forum. Keep up the good work!

Incredibly interesting and meanigful picture here, I do agree that black and white made it symbolic and in a way a little more aseptic in its documentary purpose.
A fascinating inter-cultural trip.

Another powerful photograph , sends me many messages . Look of glee while cooking such a boney meal, the mechanical fan, good one!

Both you and I are fascinated with the fact that people eat birds and do not consider it at all barbaric. Your earlier chicken image "The Tragic End", and my own "Riding High" athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/31311557 and "Chicken Seller" athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/40169878 attest to that fact. This image is essentially the same genre, and expresses the same incongruities -- to us. This would not be incongruous to Chinese viewers accustomed to such sights. The key here is the heads. In the west, heads are removed before grilling. It is a form, of course, of denial. We have still killed the bird, and are now going to grill and eat it. But somehow our chicken breasts on the barbecue look less real than these whole birds do. The guy enthusiastically fanning the flames here is indeed an incongruity -- all that air to grill two such tiny birds! By making it black and white you turn it all into a cultural symbol. Food always looks much better in color than it does in black and white. By rendering these charred birds in black and white you stress your cultural incongruity even more.

Fantastic shot. I think the focus is right where it should be. Excellent candid, cultural study and all around photograph. It has my vote.
