This is one of your stronger images, Kal, because it so simple and clean. All that polished granite around him -- he becomes a monument to indifference. I don't read Chinese so I did not get the government reference Jen mentions, but that makes it even more powerful. Abstract (hidden face), incongruous (one man taking up all that space) and human values (indifference, exhaustion, despair) all play a role here.
Wow, what a great context, and I had no idea. I love how he is ready for anything, his heavy boots, his umbrella, he is going to be here a long time. Thanks Jen for the useful feedback.
Simple but works very well. You place him right in front of the government office gate. The chinese characters tell one possiblity of the story-----The place is also an accommodation for Jiangsu people come to shanghai. I guess he might has trouble to have a place to sleep...
