This is the magnificent Angkor Wat complex that also includes Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm. The entire complex covers over 80 square miles, and was built by the Khmer between AD 800-1200 to honor their Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. It's interesting that just about everyone has heard the name Angkor Wat but very few people have heard of Angkor Thom or Ta Prohm. These two areas of the overall Angkor complex area as amazing, if not more so, than the more famous Angkor Wat area. The Ta Prohm area has been left in tact by archeologists, to show how the jungle encompassed the complex, with giant trees and root systems completely enveloping the temple structures. The pictures below give some idea of what the area must have looked like before restoration began.
