The main attraction in Montenegro is the city of Kotor. From the sea, the city is reached first through the Gulf of Kotor, and then is at the far end of the Bay of Kotor. The city's history goes back more than 2,000 years and fortresses all along the Gulf and the Bay attest to its violent past. One of the key attractions here is a defensive wall built high up into the mountain behind the city, with a fortress on top to prevent attack on the city from land forces. A good part of the original wall can still be walked.
