The First U.S. Army Group was activated in London, England,
in October of 1943 under the command of Lt. General Omar Bradley.
The mission of the Group was to prepare the plans for the invasion
of the European continent (Operation Overlord) and to also prepare
contingency plans (Operation Rankin) should Germany surrender
before the invasion. These plans were formulated with the close
cooperation of the British 21st Army Group.
The patch was approved on March 28th, 1944
On July 14th, 1944, the unit designation was changed
to the 12th Army Group
