92nd Infantry Division:
The Buffalo Division
The 92nd Division was activated as a component of the Army
of the United States on October 15th, 1942, with Headquarters
at Fort McClellan, Alabama. After one change of station to
Fort Huachuca, Arizona, the Division participated in the 1944
Louisiana maneuvers before embarking for North Africa in
September of 1944
The shoulder patch worn by the 92nd Division is based on a
WW I design approved by the AEF on Oct-dober 20th and December
8th, 1918. The buffalo on the patch alludes to the fact that
the Plains Indians used to call Negro soldiers "Black Buffaloes"
because the Negro troops used to wear buffalo skin coats during
the harsh winter months.
