85th Infantry Division:
The Custer Division.
The 85th Division was activated as a component of the Army
of the United States on May 15th, 1942, with Headquarters at
Camp Shelby, Mississippi. Following two changes of station
and participation in maneuvers in Louisiana and at the Desert
Training Center in California, the Division embarked for
North Africa in December of 1943.
The shoulder patch worn by the men of the 85th Division is based
on a WW I design that was approved by the AEF on December 24th,
1918. The letters "CD" represent the "Custer Division" and refer
to the fact that in WW I the 85th was organized at Camp Custer,
Michigan.
