81st Infantry Division:
The Wildcat Division.
The 81st Division was activated as a component of the Army
of the United States on June 15th, 1942 with Headquarters
at Camp Rucker, Alabama. Following one change of station
and participation in Conecuh Forest maneuvers of Alabama
and Florida and also in the Tennessee maneuvers, the Division
embarked for Hawaii in June of 1944. After additional
training in jungle fighting in Hawaii
The shoulder patch worn by the 81 st Division is based on a
WW I design that was approved by the AEF on October 19th, 1918.
The Wildcat design is taken from Wildcat Creek which runs through
Camp Jackson (now a Fort), South Carolina, where the Division
was organized in WW I.
