40th

40th Infantry Division:
The Sunburst Division.

When the U.S. entered WW II, the 40th Division was
allocated to the California, Nevada, and Utah National
Guard and was Federalized on March 3rd, 1941. The Division
was located at Camp San Luis Obispo for training when war
was declared and remained there as part of the defense for
Southern California until it was sent to Fort Lewis, Washington,
for advanced training. In August of 1942, the 40th was sent
to Hawaii to guard the outer islands where training was
continued and island defenses improved. After additional
amphibious and jungle warfare training on Oahu, elements of
the division embarked in December of 1943 for Guadalcanal
where the unit prepared for further assignment on New Britai.

The shoulder patch for the 40th Division is based upon a
WW I design that was approved by the AEF on November 23rd,
1918. The sun design in the center of the patch suggests
the sunshine of the Golden West where the Division had its
origins, and the blue field represents a perfect sky and the
Pacific Ocean.
