34th Infantry Division:
The Red Bull Division also The Sandstorm Division.
When the U.S. entered WW II, the 34th Division was
allocated to the Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota National
Guard and was in training at Camp Claiborne, Georgia. After
being Federalized on February 10th, 1941, the Division
participated in the 1941 Louisiana maneuvers before embarking
for the European theater in May of 1942 and becoming the First
American Division to be sent to this theater. The 34th underwent
additional training in Ireland before embarking as part of the
Western Task Force of Operation Torch — the invasion of
North Africa. On November 8th, 1942
The shoulder patch worn by the 34th Division is based on a
WW I design approved by the AEF on October 29th, 1918. The
patch is shaped like an olla (a Mexican water flask) to
represent the WW I Division training area at Camp Cody,
New Mexico.
Re-designated as the Thirty-fourth Command Headquarters.
