26th

26th Infantry Division:
The Yankee Division.

When the U.S. entered WW II, the 26th Division was
allocated to the Massachusetts National Guard and was
training at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. After Federalization
on January 16th, 1941, the Division had three changes of
station and participated in maneuvers in North Carolina and
Tennessee. The 26th embarked for overseas in August of 1944

The shoulder patch worn by the 26th Division is based on a
WW I design approved by AEF on October 26th, 1918. The
letters "YD" are in the form of a monogram and represent
"The Yankee Division." The colors of the letters are blue the
color of the French (WW I) uniform. The Division became known
as the "Yankee Division" because in WW I it was composed of
National Guard troops from the six New England States.
