25th Infantry Division:
Tropic Lightning Division and Pineapple Division.
When the U.S. entered WW II, the 25th Division was assigned
to the Regular Army with Headquarters at Schofield Barracks,
Hawaii. After the attack on Pearl Harbor and the strafing of
Schofield Barracks, the Division was moved to shore positions
for the defense of Pearl Harbor and the Ewa Plains region.
After undergoing strenuous jungle warfare training, the Division
embarked for duty on Guadalcanal (a volcanic island in the
Solomon Group) to relieve Marine units in the Henderson Field
area and went into combat on January 10th, 1943.
The 25th Division shoulder patch was approved by the
Quartermaster General on September 25th, 1944. When the
Hawaiian Division was split in 1941, two of its Infantry
Regiments (the 27th and 35th) were used to form the 25th
Division. The origin of the Division is represented by the
shape of the patch to resemble a taro leaf. The lightning
flash suggests the manner in which the Division performs its
missions, and scarlet and yellow are the old royal Hawaiian
colors.
