8th Infantry Division: (Wool with Olive Drab Border)
The Golden Arrow Division and The Pathfinder.
When the U.S. entered WW II, the 8th Division was assigned to
the Regular Army with Headquarters at Fort Jackson, South
Carolina. After three changes of station and maneuvers in
Tennessee and at the California-Nevada Desert Training Center,
the 8th Division embarked for overseas service in the
European Theater of Operations in December of 1943.
The shoulder patch worn by the 8th Division is based on a
WW I design that was approved by the AEF on April 8th, 1919.
The number "8" represents the Division number, and the blue
shield suggests Infantry. The arrow on the shield is in honor
of John Fremont, American explorer, soldier, and political
leader who was prominant in early California history. John
Fremont was known as "The Pathfinder" and the Division was
first organized in 1918 at Camp Fremont, California.
