13th

(Tab is a Copy)
13th Armored Division:
The Black Cat Division.

The 13th Armored Division was activated on October 15th, 1942,
with Headquarters at Camp Beale, California, and was initially
organized with a cadre of personnel drawn from the 5th Armored
Division. After participating in the 1943 Oregon maneuvers and
a change of station to Camp Bowie, Texas, the 13th embarked
for the European Theater in January of 1945.

The Division nickname is attributed to the fact that tanks were
offsprings of caterpillar tractors which were called "cats" by
their operators; however, the Division's unit history depicts a
drawing of an armored patch with the number "13" and several bad
luck symbols in the design including a black cat which could refer
to the fact that a black cat crossing one's path is a sign of bad
luck — especially to an enemy.

Campaigns:
World War II
(Rhineland, Central Europe).
