5th Armored Division:
The Victory Division.
The 5th Armored Division was activated on October 10th, 1941,
with Headquarters at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was initially
organized with a cadre of personnel drawn from the 4th
Armored Division. After two changes of station and participating
in the 1942 Desert Training Center maneuvers in California and
also in the 1943 Tennessee maneuvers, the Division embarked
for the European Theater in February of 1944.
The Division nickname is based on the Roman numeral "V" for "5"
and also "V" for "Victory," and the two combined represent the
5th Armored Division
