The 187th Airborne RCT was a Regular Army
unit but was deactivated in August of 1956.
Elements of the Regiment (but not as an RCT) have
fought in three different wars since the unit was
constituted in November of 1942 as the 187th Glider
Infantry. Elements from the Regiment have been awarded
Presidential Unit Citations from three nations: the
Philippines, Korea (twice), and the United States
(both Army and Navy). While part of the 101st Airborne
Division in Vietnam, elements of the Regiment earned
the U.S. Valorous Unit Citation and the Republic of
Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. As an RCT, the unit had
two combat jumps in Korea, one at Sukchon and Sunchon
on 20 October 1950 and one at Munsan-ni on 23 March 1951.
The parachute on the patch suggests the Airborne nature
of the unit, and the wing suggests the unit's original
service as a Glider Regiment.
The patch has been made in too many different variations
to list both with the tab attached and separate and was
also used as a pocket patch by elements of the Regiment
while part of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam.
