San Diego Bay, 28.Sep.2009

Sailing a Catalina Capri 22 from Harbor Yacht Club, San Diego, 28.Sep.2009
This was our first "exploring the vicinity" sail in San Diego, California. One of our previous sails 2007 in Long Beach brought us to Harbor Yacht Club, whose main location is in San Diego on one of the peninsulas along Harbor Island Drive. The "Harbor Island Yacht Club" proven to be an easy going organization, very visitor friendly. One surprise to us was the size of their fleet: Some 20 small Capri 22' on one side, tied up in two rows(!) and a large number of Catalina's 27' and 29' on the opposite side of the dock were only the "entry level" boats. We did not even got a key to a specific Capri, they asked us to pick one whichever we wanted. Our boat was called "Assault"... Nomen est omen? Not really! The sail itself was rather quaint and relaxing. Except for the docking: Our engine has died on us, and so we did what we do best: We set sail and docked under sails. Mild wind favored the maneuver.

Our adventure begun around lunch time. We left the West Basin and once in the San Diego Bay, turned to port to sail the North San Diego Bay between Coronado Peninsula and San Diego's waterfront toward the Downtown and the Coronado Bridge. We saw magnificent skyline, historic ships docked in San Diego, the Midway Air Carrier Museum Ship, and one of these titanic cruise ships. We reached the Coronado bridge later as we assumed. We turned back, without entering the Glorietta Bay and seeing from water the famous hotel Del Coronado. We were tacking all way back till we reached half way point of the exit channel. By than the sun begun to set and we turned back toward the West Basin. The Coronado Peninsula is rather unremarkable on this stretch. It is occupied by a naval base and an airport, but on the opposite side the shoreline of Point Loma Peninsula was very pretty, hosting numerous nice homes and marinas. The huge cruise ship departed from San Diego as we were sailing back and passed us on her way out.
