Sunrise was gorgeous. I climbed through the hatch to the foredeck with my Nikon
and could not stop watch it. The omnipresent internet connection gave me moving radar
map of the vicinity and I saw the concentrated rain front literally touching north
cap of Catalina Island. Here in Avalon there was no trace of rain so far. Sky was scattered,
and the sun illuminated Avalon in a most magical way I can remember.
And yet as predicted by weather forecast, all this came to a sudden end. In a dramatic spectacle pitch black clouds rolled in from the west and provided one of a kind contrast between the still sun soaked Avalon and the blackness of the sky. On the east side a strangely regular, lenticular shaped cloud with rain rolled at a high speed toward south and soon everything was cold and wet. Radar images showed this rainfall to be strangely localized to a small circle moving toward south east. And so it was: Once we departed from Avalon, rain stopped and we could set aside all the rain gear. However, we did not get too much sun either. We had to cherish what we saw in the morning: The magnificent sunrise and the black sky over the city.
Duke's Point: One new estate stands out in the Newport
Bay by its lavish and well maintained waterfront gardens. See the
image n4936 and
following. A mural facing waterfront says "Duke's Point".
I was curious what that meant. Apparently this estate was constructed where previously
John Wayne's house
stood till recently. Thus the name "Duke's Point."
I will check if some of my older images from the Newport
Bay actually showed the original Wayne's home.
If yes, I will post it and add a cross link allowing to compare
the "was" with the "is now."
