St. Charles Auditorium at St. Charles Borromeo School
Destrehan, Louisiana
Designed in the early 1900's by French priest Fr. John Basty this building is one in a complex of school buildings, church and rectory. Originally called Red Church it is one of the oldest Catholic church settlements in Louisiana and originates to the mid 1700's.
My 1st. Grade classroom front right side of the building.....Sr. Michael C.I.C teacher. Building had 4 classrooms, a stage and in 1953 was the cafeteria until the new one was built. Coke machine had the coldest cokes for a nickel. Chest type machine had cold red pop, white pop and root beer and orange drinks in large bottles, also a nickel. Outside of the building is the same as it was in 1953. Good memories!!

My brothers and I attended grammer school here under Fr. Basty and years later my parents Dr.. & Mrs Paul T. Landry, my two sisters, Jean Landry, Mrs. Margaret L. Bradley, her husband Judge C.W. Bradley and brother Dr. William Landry are all buried in its cemetary. Your photos are beautiful and along with your historical notes are helping to preserve our fantastic architectural and cultural history alive. Thanks for the memories.
