Today is the 280th Anniversary of the Ursulines in New Orleans

Ursuline Chapel

On August 7, 1727, a small group of Ursuline nuns stepped from the French sailing ship "The Gironde" on to New Orleans soil. They quickly established a convent, a hospital and a school.
Some 280 years later they are still well established in New Orleans in their convent and school on State Street in Uptown New Orleans.
In this photo an elderly nun prays in a chair on the altar. The gold statue was brought to New Orleans from France. On special occasions crowns made of jewels donated by the people of New Orleans adorn the heads of Mary and Child.

dear colleen, the present convent is actually the fifth convent or location. "If you count the house in the French Quarter rented for the Ursulines by the Company of the Indies, between 1728 and 1735 as the first convent; a ramshackled building close to what we know as the old Ursuline Convent and adjacent to the military hospital (long gone), built for the sisters and occupied between 1735 and 1745 as the second convent, the building known as the Old Ursuline Convent as the third convent, and the plantation convent taken over for the Industrial Canal as the fourth convent, then this complex is the fifth Ursuline Convent, and sisters’ chapel in New Orleans." Just thought you would like to know. Thank you for your wonderful pictures. Pame Tanner

Those ursuluines and doms just make me feel so little. Those high walls and all that work that is done to complete such a powerful building is truly admirable. Nice picture Coleen. Vote.

How Beautiful, Coleen. It looks like a Catholic chapel instead of a meeting hall.
