Holy Angels Academy on St. Claude Avenue

New Orleans

The buildings are housing military personnel and FEMA workers. This is in Bywater next to the Ninth Ward and did not receive the extensive floodwater that the lower part received. It did have flooding but was able to house "first responders" after the second week following Katrina.
It was an all-girls Catholic school owned by the Marianite Order of Sisters. It was considered the "sister-school" to Holy Cross' all boys school.
It now houses senior citizens.

I was a postulant and novice of the Sisters Marianites of Holy Cross here in 1959 before the new Novitiate was built. It is comforting to know that the peace experienced then in this place remains even now.

For those posting earlier messages, the grounds are as beautiful as ever, and the renovations are close to complete. It is absolutely beautiful again. My 50th Anniversary Class will be there to celebrate our 50th in March, 2010.

I was one of the military personal that stayed here and I was able to hook power up here after the storm. I remember building showers in the back for us to use. I remember the nice landscape on the left of this picture I used to sit out there after patroling the ninth ward and being at peace. Really great place and it was nice to call it home the 6 weeks I was there.

It is a beautiful picture, I finally drove by it today and it is still as beautiful and giving as it was when I walked the halls from 1985-1989

Seeing this brings back alot! it seems like forever ago that I was living in the convent, with 200 of my fellow soldiers. I loved this place, cleaned this place, repaired this place, prayed in this place. I will never forget the convent of the Holy Angels, or its Kind Sisters!

Thank you so much for posting this picture! I am a graduate of the class of 1981 and I have not returned to the area because I don't want to see the destruction of it all. It warms my heart to know that my alma mater survived!

Peace,

Wonderful. Naturally framed by the character of those Oaks... you know I love it.
