A Treasured Victim of Katrina-February 2, 2006

Lakeview in New Orleans

Notice the Katrina water mark on the porch post and door. The rocker is lonely.
Last night, February 2, five months after Katrina, we had hail, high winds, torrent rain and lightning that made the night look like a sunshiny day. Abraham, my cat, was in my bed and at my face with big eyes and I knew it was bad. We took shelter in the middle of the house. There was lots of damage in our area from tornadoes--at our International Airport and in residential areas. Houses that were just beginning to get cleaned up and restored from Katrina were once more damaged and some that had escaped Katrina were destroyed. At least there will be no question from the stupid insurance companies as to whether "it was wind or water damage."
We had no damage or loss, thank God, just loss of sleep and an hour of terror.
I went out to get photos today and was amused (though it is not funny) by all the Portalets set out for construction crews that are upside down all over town. I remember seeing a Portalet going end over end one time with someone inside. Hopefully, no one was in a Portalet at 2 a.m. today. Happy Ground Hog Day.

A powerful, evocative image. It is hard for me to think of beautiful New Orleans in ruin. Very nicely composed.

Wonderful composition! The rocker looks so sad! Great shot! I agree it was quite a night!

I can't even imagine what it looks like inside given that watermark. This really captures in a powerful way the damage done. I like the understated look which has much more impact and sadness. I've been reading in the other PADs about the night of terror. I sure hope y'all are spared more bad weather but saw on the news last night that there's a La Nina occurring right now. It just makes me angry that the government is so ineffectual in times like these. Sorry for the editorial. :)

Another reminder of natures power, I hope this year is better.

That lonely, broken rocker is unbearably sad. It does seem I missed quite a night!

Glad to hear that all is well with you Coleen

Wow Coleen, this just shows us how high the water actually was, it is so hard to imagine when you have never seen this type of devastation before. I am so happy to hear that you didn't have any damage from last night's storm. It did make the news up here in Canada!

This brings to mind a bunch of cliches.
"When it rains it pours"; "No rest for the weary"; and so on....
But what applies here is "What doesn't kill me, make me stronger".

Did the ground hog see his shadow?

Wow, an excellent image even though it shows how high the water was!

Nice shot

looking at this, I can understand why some cultures have pale colours as signs of mourning.

I'm sad for the rocker, too. I do love my porch rockers. Poignant, Coleen.
