Mamma Swan--A Remembrance of Joy and Beauty

New Orleans, Louisiana

I will be too busy today to take photos (Katrina house restoration) so I have posted a photo from last summer.
I began photographing a mamma and papa swan and their six cygnets shortly after the cygnets hatched at the end of April. One cygnet was killed by a dog early on but the five cygnets grew to be beauties and I visited them almost every day in the bayou and lagoons of City Park. I have an entire gallery dedicated to them. They were such a delight and so wonderful to photograph, almost every photo was perfect without any alterations.
After hurricane Katrina I searched for weeks for them and finally found Mamma Swan and three of the cygnets in Audubon Park, some 10 miles away. They must have swam in the flood waters to higher ground. Papa Swan and two cygnets were never seen again.
I am sorry to report that I have not been able to find Mamma Swan or the three cygnets in several weeks. And, my heart is hurting.

A wonderful shot. Apprecaite the tragic background. With so much human misery we (or at least I) tend to forget the many animals that suffer through these disasters as well.

They may still be safe Coleen, we have a pair up here that survive our winters fairly well. My fingers are crossed for yours.

beautiful image Coleen

Wonderful picture, Coleen. Maybe they've all met up again somewhere else? Traumatic events like 'Katrina' are bound to disrupt the naturals instincts of wildlife - so lets hope they have just 'moved on'.

A very beautiful and graceful bird and enchanting family. Wonderful photo and reflection Coleen. So sorry about them going missing!

I'm sorry to hear that after all your dedication to these graceful creatures. Perhaps nature has done what nature does, or maybe they have simply moved on elsewhere.
