The day before Katrina struck, Botanical Garden workers laid all of the spectacular collection of staghorn ferns on the lower benches of the collonade to escape the wind. However, when the water flooded the gardens the ferns lay in salt water for several weeks and drowned.
One of the gorgeous ferns that was killed is used here as a basket for the poinsettia arrangement.
