Sugar Refinery in Raceland

Raceland, Louisiana

Sugar cane is grown throughout southern Louisiana. It is harvested in the fields and brought to a refinery where it is turned into sugar.
It was in Louisiana that Etienne de Bore discovered the method of making granulated sugar from sugar cane. De Bore was born in Normandy, France but came to Louisiana in 1771 and married the daughter of D'estrehan in St. Charles Parish (now the town of Destrehan). He was given significant landholdings by the king of France and part of that land is now Audubon Park in New Orleans.

Coleen - beautiful collection of photos. I grew up just south of Raceland and still remember the two strong smells associated with the industry - the rich, sweet smoky smell of burning the leaves off the cut cane in the fields and the sour rancid smell of the decaying bagasse piled by the refinery after the sugar had been removed.

You know, my son & David's daughter actually eat sugar right out of the packets when we go to restaurants (eww) and they would prolly eat their way right through a tour of this refinery! I'd better "turn the page" quick! They might eat my monitor!
