In November, 2000, I saw a black phantom going in and out of my shrubbery. After two weeks he showed himself, purring loudly and wanting attention. He had bad wounds on his ears and chin and I doctored him. At the end of November he disappeared, only to appear again in November, 2001, with just as many bites and scratches and I again doctored him. In 2002 he came again in November, this time with a bad leg wound as though he had been tied up and the rope had eaten into his leg. After treating the wound for a few weeks it healed and I thought he would disappear again. But, this time he stayed and I let him into the house where he became an instant member of our family. He is very well behaved, a gentleman, and I can always count on him to be waiting at the door when I come home.
He was with me through Hurricane Katrina and watched a lot of it from the windowsill but when the tornados began to roar he went under the bed with our darling cat, Sadie, and I went with them. He adapted well living away from his house for more than 100 days and was always at the door waiting for me when I returned from Katrina duty at night.
In 2008 he evacuated with us to New Roads and Hurricane Gustave came right through New Roads. He was very well behaved for the four days we were in someone else's home.
Abraham was the most gentle, well behaved cat and got along with everyone and other people's pets as well.
October 24, 2013--This evening, I saw that he was suffering and took him to the vet. I had hoped he could die at home, a natural death, but it was not meant to be. Abraham went to meet his Maker and is now buried under his tree in our garden next to his friend, Sadie. I shall miss him terribly.
