Metairie Cemetery

Neither the living or the dead escaped the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Metairie Cemetery was under water for several weeks from the flooding caused by the break in the 17th Sreet Canal levee. Coffins popped out and some were floating. The New Orleans Coroner had to identify the remains of any coffin that was not in its original burial place.
The dead grass is evidence of the salt water intrusion. However, the live oaks seem unaffected. If it were not for the live oaks in New Orleans the city would be naked.

The Cemeteries in New Orleans were one of the things that captured me on my first of many visits. Wow.

So eerie the thought of all these graves under water!
