Nuns' Gallery and Point of Rescue

Ursuline Convent in New Orleans

It was here, from this end of the gallery, that the nuns and their guests were taken out by boat eight days after Hurricane Katrina. There were 45 in all who stayed here with no electricity, no running water and looters running rampant in the City. However, they had prepared well and were well stocked with food, water and enough water to flush toilets and meet their personal needs. These buildings were built in the early 1900's so open windows on the second and third floors created cross ventilation in the humid, 100 degree weather and provided safety.
There are thousands of stories like this all over the New Orleans metro area; stories of bravery and heroism and kindness.

I was a postualnt at this house of the Ursulines 40 years ago. One always had a feeling that the building and the community could withstand anything. It did!

These pictures brought tears to my eyes. I was educated for 16 years by the Ursulines of Toledo, Ohio, which causes me to feel a relationship to the Ursulines here. At age 86 I go back far enough that some our sisters would tell us about N. Orleans and our Lady of Prompt Succor. God bless you
