Finally, some work has begun on the restoration of this once grand house. Built in the late 1700's, it became the home of Leon Godchaux in 1869. Godchaux built a sugar refinery in the River Parish town of Reserve and the refinery gave jobs to so many in the area, when sugar was king in Louisiana.
The house was moved from the original site to the Great River Road in the early 2,000 with a little restoration work. It was then owned by the River Road Historical Society. They gave it to the civil parish (county) of St. John the Baptist. Nothing was done to it and it was quickly deteriorating. Hopefully, this part of history will be saved.
