Katherine's family, the Perilloux's, have a long history with the Corps in St. Charles Parish dating back more than a century. They lost land and houses and buildings to the Corps for flood protection. In the early 1930's, her grandfather wrote a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt inviting him to visit the newly completed Spillway. The President obliged and school children lined the levee to greet him.
