Piliated Woodpeckers

For several years I have seen the flash of red through the trees but have never been able to capture a photo. They must be in mating season right now because they stayed put for several minutes on a tree; there were three of them and you can see the red spot on the left as one eluded me.

The one that eluded you may have been last years juvenile; you got both adults in this shot - well done! This species of woodpecker is my favorite; they visit my suet feeders all winter.
