As the only facility on the U. S. mainland to house and treat victims of leprosy (Hansen's Disease), it was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1994, forever preventing the Federal Bureau of Prisons to house prisoners in the facility.
In 2000 the NATIONAL HANSEN'S DISEASE MUSEUM was established to preserve the unique history of the residents and the leprosarium.
