Archbishop Philip Hannan's Funeral Cortege on Canal Street

Canal Street and South Pierce

A horse-drawn hearse carries the casket of Archbishop Philip Hannan in a four mile procession from Notre Dame Seminary to St. Louis Cathedral in the Vieux Carre' where he will be laid to rest underneath the altar. He was 98 years old and served as Archbishop of New Orleans from 1965 to 1988. Though retired, he stayed very active until early 2011 when pneumonia weakened him. He was much beloved and was always looked upon as "The Archbishop" even though there were three who succeeded him. They could never fill his shoes.

Very special, Coleen.

You've had some real nice pictures of his funeral and his life Coleen, and I see a TV cameraman in there for a close up! You would think they could stand back and not have to be in between the casket and his escorts!

He sounded like a wonderful man. May he be remembered with much affection.

It looks like they really did a nice funeral for him. Honored him.
