Yikes

Audubon Park in New Orleans

I had not been to Bird Island in Audubon Park in ten days and when I got there this afternoon the trees were empty and there was only this bird and two others who appeared new because their lores were bright green. All of the Park people came out and no one could explain what had happened to cause the hundreds of egrets to leave their nests.
Since they tout it as a Bird Sanctuary and the only rookery of its kind in New Orleans, I think they should try to find out.

Coleen;s photos are spectacular. I think the storm scared them away. Some other posts I saw blamed worked by the Corp. If true why did they come back this year. I was at the park today (Friday April 29 and no egrets.

I meant to warn you. The birders on the birding forum said that the storm we had decimated the nests. Of the 300 or so nesting birds only 75 or so returned.

This is a great shot, Coleen; but a troubling scenario. Disappearing wildlife is becoming all too common.

Weird situation, indeed. Hope the birds will be back soon.
This one looks like frozen in the air. Great shot, Coleen. V.

I think they should too. I can't imagine what happened to drive the birds away. This is a super capture of one of the stragglers. I imagine he will be leaving soon too.
