The Couple Who Refuse to Leave - 2010

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, in its infinite stupidity, decided that the egrets should not be allowed to nest in this rookery this year. They hired a company to create noise and light who come at dusk and dawn since the birds arrived, and shoot guns with noise and flares to frighten the birds away. The rookery is on private property so the shooting has to be done from the levee.
I had a conference telephone call with the Corps, some of the people on the other end of the line probably don't even know what an egret is, and they have no intention to cease and desist.
This one egret couple has remained in spite of it all. Their nest is almost complete and I am hoping that they stay and hatch their eggs and raise their chicks. It will be lonely for them because usually about 300 birds come to the rookery each year for the past four decades.
The Times Picayune is doing a feature story on this action of the Corps and I am hoping that they also name the company and the price the company is receiving, our taxpayers dollars in action.
I have not slept well for over a week thinking about the confusion of the birds. Egrets can live up to 15 years in the wild so I know that most of them have returned to this rookery each spring for at least that long.

Fantastic image, Coleen! Has anybody declared a reason for needing these birds removed from the rookery?

I'm upset too!! Do you have a Dept.of Natural Resources? Boy our DNR guy would be on there case.

A beautiful shot but such a ridiculous situation. Who makes decisions like these?

What a superb catch Coleen, she looks as though she's telling him to clean his feet first! What an awful story about the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers shooting at them, I'm going to vote & hopes it brings your gallery up to the top page to let pbasers know about this at least!

Is there a reason for this...one that doesn't have political spin attached ?? Ummmm, do they know what the word ROOKERY means !!!
LynnH27-Feb-2010 02:51
How awful and sad. I hope you enlighten us when you find out what is going on. I will be HAPPY to write to the Corps or the newspaper and fuss at them.

And, if the rookery is on private property what rights do they have?? Evidently whoever owns it doesn't want them shooting anything off there...I'm ticked, really ticked!
Cindi Smith27-Feb-2010 01:58
Why do they insist on doing this??? It makes no sense. I would think a lot of folks would be up in arms on this!!! I just don't understand!

I am saddened to read this story Coleen. I too feel very badly for these beautiful birds. I hope this pair hangs in there just to upset the Corp!

What harm do these birds do? Why would the Corps care if they nested here?
Karen Stuebing26-Feb-2010 20:21
Fantastic capture. She looks displeased with his offering. :)

I cannot believe what the Corps of Engineers is doing but it doesn't surprise me at all. They approve everything.

Why don't you start an online petition?

Vote and hope this makes it to the top so everyone sees it.

Wonderful image Coleen! Over the past 40 years I've seen so much habitat destroyed or made otherwise uninhabitable. Nothing surprises me anymore. We like to pretend we are environmentalists. They write it all off as the progress of man.

sad story
lovely image, Coleen

The Corps always seem to be bothering someone, maybe they should spend more time doing their job instead...

Good for them!

What is the rookery and why does The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers want to scare these birds away?
This is such a beautiful photo Coleen!
