Ashland-Belle Helene Plantation

Darrow, Louisiana

Built by Duncan Kenner this house is symetrical on all sides. It is my favorite of all the plantation houses. Unfortunately, during the latter part of the 1900's it fell into disrepair and vandals did a lot of damage on the interior. It was sold by the owners in the early 2000's to an oil/chemical industry and is now surrounded by a high fence and closed.
Duncan Kenner owned race horses and had a track surrounding the house. Visitors would stand on the galleries to watch the races. Besides horses Kenner raised sugarcane at Ashland and amassed a fortune. The town of Kenner, Louisiana is named for him.

This is also one of my favs! I used to drive out from Baton Rouge on weekends and "self tour". The caretaker would hand you a printout and you could walk around on your own (before the Chemical Co. and fence). I would walk up the very graceful and beautiful freestanding curved staircase to the attics and look out over the river. Walking back down the staircase, you could imagine yourself in a hoop skirt and satin slippers..friendly ghosts!
