Nottoway was damaged by the winds of Hurricane Gustav in August, 2008 and is undergoing major repairs.
John Hampden Randolph commissioned the building of this house and it was completed in 1859. All of the building materials were made on the grounds with the cypress coming from the swamps in the back of the property. The only non-cypress detail is the ballroom floor, which is made of maple, a harder wood.
There are sixty four rooms in this house and 365 openings (windows and doors).
In the early 1980's Nottoway was completely restored by Mr. Arlin K. Dease, one of the South's leading restoration specialists. He sold Nottoway 15 years later to an Australian who has renamed it Nottoway Plantation, Restaurant and Inn.
The town got its name from this house which the locals called "the white castle".
